Supreme Court To Pass Verdict on The Pegasus Snooping Case

Remember the news headlines on the Pegasus surveillance that came into limelight. Supreme Court will pass a judgement on the Pegasus row today. The verdict is said to be given at 10:30 am by a bench of three justice: Chief Justice of India, NV Ramana, Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Surya Kant.

Pegasus is spyware designed by an Israeli firm NSO group and is capable of snooping into smartphones and covertly hacking them. It is also capable of exploiting the iOS even the latest versions i.e. 14.6 It can read the target’s text messages, check call details, can access the target person’s smartphone’s camera, microphone. It can also recover the stored passwords on phone.

The petitioners of the case who includes former Union minister Yashwant Sinha, CPM MP John Brittas, Supreme Court advocate ML Sharma and some individual journalists – had asked the court to pass an order the government to bring to light the details of the unauthorised surveillance using the Pegasus spyware, built by the Israeli firm NSO Group.

In the year 2019,  WhatsApp sued the NSO group in a U.S. court. In July 2021, Amnesty International, along with 13 media outlets across the globe presented their report explaining how the Pegasus was used in alleged snooping over 100s of targets including renowned Indians. When this matter was discussed with the firm, the NSO claimed its spyware is sold only to the authorized governments and only for threat combat and security purposes. It said that governments uses it in security surveillance.

The matter reached the top court when it was disclosed by a top media agency that some renowned politicians and VIPS were also under Pegasus spyware’s target. Sources says that BJP ally Nitish Kumar, chief Minister of Bihar, has also urged for a quick investigation into the matter.

The NSO group further clarified that it only deals with governments and not individuals. They have claimed that Pegasus is capable of snooping and getting unauthorized access to smartphones.
