Doordarshan was one of our favourite channels in childhood, at least for the 90s children. 🙂 Every Sunday we 90s kids used to wake up and then used to get glued to our seats watching our favourite shows turn by turn.  Well, Doordarshan was established on 15 September 1959. Do you know that Doordarshan is one of the largest broadcasting organizations in studio and transmitter infrastructure? Today we are going to talk about the most popular Doordarshan TV shows of 90s.

 

It has given us a lot of sweet memories and TV shows of almost all genres, yeah?  The motto of Doordarshan has been “Satyam Shivam Sundaram“. Doordarshan channel is a good dose of nostalgia and also carries a tons of childhood memories.

 

Over the years Indian TV Industry has evolved a lot in making of good serials to best serials in terms of quality, content, creativity etc. In those days of TV Industry, contents were realistic, based totally on-ground reality of Indian Civil Society. Doordarshan is one of the oldest channel running on, which is owned by the government. At that time also it was very difficult for artists to get entry in the channel.

 

In those days this was the only platform where artists showcase their talent and skills on the camera. And if you are in your late 80s and early 90s than you know the craze of Doordarshan channel at that time. It was the only source of entertainment at that time as far as TV viewing is considered.

In those times, Doordarshan used to telecast a movie once a week and people eagerly waited for that day. Near 1980-1990 every house does not have TVs, so whole localities or colony people gathered at the home of a person who had TV and watched movies, people used to wait for Chitrahaar to telecast so they can watch few songs. Nowadays, we have tons of channels and no. of serials but apart from a few Pakistani serials that telecasts on Zindagi, not even a single daily soap can be compared to Doordarshan serials.

1. Hum Log

Best DD National TV serials of 90s

‘Hum Log’ is the first serial drama series in India that telecast on Doordarshan. 7 July 1984 was golden when it started to telecast on the channel. It has a sequel of 156 long episodes and it represented the struggle in a life of a middle-class man and family.

 

2. Ramayana

DD National 90s TV serials

Ramayana was telecasted  in the late of 80s that is 1987-1988. This show was directed by Ramanand Sagar. This show portrayed the whole story about the written lord Rama in Hinduism. This was the first show created on the holy book Ramayana of Hinduism. When the Ramayana is use to telecasts on the television many people start worshipping them.

 

They start believing that the man who is playing the role of Lord Rama is actually have a soul of Lord Rama. Person who played the role of Lord Rama is Mr. Arun Govind. And when the Ramayana telecasts at that time people Watch it after taking bath, removing their slippers etc. Nowadays also many parents make their children watch Ramayana as it is full of knowledge and ethics of life. 3. Mahabharat

Mahabharat was aired on Doordarshan in the year of 1998 on 2nd October. This is also a religious show and based on the story of the holy book of Hinduism. This has a 94 long episodes that gets telecasted on the national network. In this series speaker narrates the tale of Kurukshetra, about the battle between Pandavas and Kauravas. Mahabharat has its own value and culture which showed in this show. Mahabharat carries a lot of spiritual lessons. This shows lasts between 1998-1990.

3. Shaktimaan

Shaktimaan was the most popular show among the children in 90s. This show was telecasted on the channel Doordarshan in the year 1997. In this show  the role of shaktimaan was played by the Mukesh Khanna. At that time this show had a different type of fan following, as children were crazy about this show. This show is specifically based on the superhero, shaktimaan, and his alter ego Pandit Gangadhar Vidyadhar  Mayadhar Omkarnath Shastri, who was a photographer of a newspaper.

In this show director narrates the story of shaktimaan that how a human is blessed with superhuman powers through 5 elements of nature and mainly with meditation: Space, Earth, Air, Water. It has a long series of episodes that is 450 episodes and it telecasted between 13 September 1997-27 March 2005.

 

4. Nukkad

Popular Doordarshan TV Shows of 90s

Nukkad was telecasted in late 80s but it was very popular at that time. It has a quite long series of episodes that is 100 episode. This show was directed by the Saeed Akhtar Mirza & Kundan Shah. It was telecasted between 1986-1987. The story of this mind-blowing show was written by the Prabodh Joshi & Anil Chaudhary. In this show the writer narrates based on the struggle and difficulties faced by the people with low income. It has such a huge fan- following and popularity that it was re-launched in the year 1993 with an improvised name -‘ Naya Nukkad’.
