Did Amit Masurkar’s ‘Sherni’ Make the Cut?

The two-hour ten-minute reality check was probably a much-needed relaxation from the strenuousness of manmade life. In a world of televisions, tablets, smartphones, the internet, and various other gadgets- here is a glimpse into the world of the wild- the unknown and seldom unexplored life of wild animals.

Sherni Movie Review

The movie focuses on two very contrasting themes- the beauty of wildlife and how it looks the best when it is in its original habitat and the ghastly atrocities committed by man on these animals.

The movie’s main protagonist, Vidya Vincent is shown as the Divisional Forest Officer (D.F.O) of the forests of Madhya Pradesh, where a tigress had been creating havoc for the past few days- more and more people from the adjacent village, while taking their cattle to graze in the forest ended up dead. Her character has been beautifully carved out by Vidya Balan wherein we can sense her feelings as we see her take charge and stand up for justice in a male-dominated work environment.

The antagonist in the movie, played by Sharat Saxena is Ranjan Rajhans, who is known for the number of tigers he had hunted in the past. His connections with higher political authorities help him gain the trust of many villagers, who is uneducated and foolish-minded at times, who gave Ranjan their full support to find the tigress and kill her. He on the other hand not only wanted the tigress, but also her young cubs.

The government officials in the Forest department in higher positions also were willing to turn a blind eye to his behavior to save their jobs. Could Vidya save the tigress and her two cubs? Or did they end up being another one of Ranjan Rajhans’ achievements? You will have to watch the film on Amazon Prime Video to find out.

The direction by Amit Masurkar has been a clear indication of his genius and eye for detail, however, the movie does seem to roll at a slower pace than usual at some points.

The editing of certain scenes could have been crisper. The screenplay by the director himself along with Yashasvi Mishra and Aastha Tiku has been phenomenal. Smaller details such as the costume and makeup have also played a huge role in bringing out the characters and the feel of the movie- Vidya’s makeup is minimal at all times- a look essential for her job- a more down–to–earth image of her character is built- the audience in a sense, connects with the protagonist.

The cinematography- the angles shot, the frames decided for each scene- the lighting used for each sequence makes a significant contribution. Rakesh Haridas, the cinematographer claimed that the crew tried to intrude as little as possible into the forest as it is the backbone of the story and needs to be shown as it is.

The production of the film, like every other film, has impacted ‘Sherni’ – Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Vikram Malhotra, and the director himself, Amit V. Masurkar.

Vidya Balan was typically roped in for the main character because of her consistent range in portraying characters – she, as claimed by the producers, ‘molds’ herself into the character she is given and does an excellent job of bringing it to life.

The film shows many small role characters, such as the Forest Friends, and the villagers who are shown to be helpful in some ways, or the reason for their delay in helping the tigress find her way back to the forest.

In a way, the politicians in the film, act as an example of the real-life horror faced by people, animals alike where the innocent are caught in the crossfire of the political mafia using its power to brainwash or manipulate common people for their advantage.

Last but not the least, Neeraj Kabi, Vijay Raaz, Brijendra Kala, Ila Arun, Suma Mukundan, and Mukul Chadda played their roles beautifully and aided the plot to unfold realistically. ‘Sherni’ is more than just a film, it brings you closer to the wildlife and evokes emotions such as compassion and sympathy in you that may have been long forgotten while trying to keep up with others in the race of life.
